GrooveTech is transforming road infrastructure in South Africa by using recycled plastic waste to build durable, pothole-free, and climate-resilient roads while improving livelihoods for informal waste workers.
South Africa has over 25 million potholes, with the government requiring more than R200 billion to address the backlog. At the same time, only 35% of plastic packaging is recycled, leaving vast amounts of waste unutilised.
GrooveTech addresses this challenge by diverting plastic waste from landfills, creating sustainable road materials that offer a long-term solution to both plastic pollution and road maintenance.
With TRANSFORM’s support, GrooveTech will commercialise new technologies that use plastic waste, including hard-to-recycle plastics, to manufacture sustainable road construction materials. The initiative will also establish a small processing plant in South Africa, creating new economic opportunities for over 450 informal waste workers and 37 buyback centres in townships and rural areas.
