Sanivation

People living in low-income communities in Kenya do not have access to sewered sanitation to take waste away from their homes.

Sanivation builds and operates waste-to-resource treatment plants which collect and combine human waste with sustainable agricultural waste to produce solid fuels to heat factories. TRANSFORM worked with Sanivation before it pivoted its business to operate treatment plants, whilst it was operating a container-based sanitation solution. Users paid a service fee to rent a toilet and have the waste collected and processed by Sanivation.

TRANSFORM funded work to explore whether bundling a subscription for hand soap and sanitiser delivery alongside emptying the toilets for waste collection would improve handwashing. This provided an opportunity to improve handwashing practice, as well as improve client satisfaction with Sanivation’s service.
