AppCyclers is modernising plastic waste management through its Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative.
Ghana generates 1.1 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet only 5% is recycled. In the Northern Region, over 200 tonnes of plastic waste are produced daily, leading to flooding, soil degradation, and water contamination. Poor waste management increases disease risks, while women and youth, who are most affected by these hazards, have limited economic opportunities in the waste sector.
By leveraging technology, infrastructure upgrades, and community-driven approaches, AppCyclers improves efficiency and inclusion in the recycling sector. Its custom digital platform enables real-time tracking of collection activities, efficient marketplace management for recyclables, and the formal recognition of informal waste workers through accurate data collection. The initiative also provides training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and fair compensation to 100 women and youth waste workers, creating sustainable economic opportunities.
With TRANSFORM’s support, AppCyclers will expand its monthly plastic waste collection, diverting approximately 1,800 additional tonnes of waste from landfills by the end of the project. By reducing plastic waste pollution, the project will improve soil and water quality, mitigate health risks, and create a cleaner environment. It will also empower women and youth, promoting financial independence and advancing gender inclusion.
