Access to electricity is critical to the social and economic development of communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, in Nigeria there are over 70 million people without access. This can affect the provision of quality education, basic healthcare services and the supply of clean water. Many people, therefore, generate their own electricity through petrol and diesel generators, which are expensive and pose a threat to the environment and the health of communities.
Through its battery-powered generators, Capsule, that can be charged with solar energy, Reeddi provides cleaner, more reliable and affordable electricity to households and businesses operating in energy-poor regions of the world. It uses a hardware-as-a-service business model to eliminate the expensive upfront cost barrier associated with accessing reliable electricity. Operating a hardware-as-a-service model ensures customers pay an affordable daily rental fee to access electricity anytime and anywhere, easily.
TRANSFORM’s support has enabled Reeddi to scale its business, funding the manufacture and deployment of 500 units of Reeddi’s Capsule across 10 Nigerian communities, reaching 500 combined households and businesses.
So far, Reeddi has supplied cleaner, more reliable and affordable electricity to over 10,000 households and businesses, helping them save over 40% of their daily energy expenses. Access to reliable electricity in low-income communities helps increase household capita income and business productivity.
